The quiet side of Jamaica

Five private rooms, a bar and a grill, in the hills above Jamaica's south coast.

The parrot added himself. He's not carved, not painted and not on the payroll, and he's been at the gate longer than most of the guests.

Country quiet,
nothing worn out

Coconut Creek is new. The block went up recently in Top Hill, in southeast St. Elizabeth, and everything in it — the tiling, the fittings, the paving in the courtyard — is still in its first season.

What's around it is the opposite of new. This is farming country, high enough to catch the breeze, with the hills running down towards the south coast and very little between you and the view.

Five rooms open onto a paved courtyard behind a gate. Each has its own bathroom and its own key, plus a fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle, so you can keep your own hours. The bar and grill is on the property, which is usually where the evening goes.

The property

White and charcoal, two storeys, built around a courtyard you can park in. Gated at the road, planted up, and lit at night.

Five rooms,

Rooms are assigned when you arrive, based on what's free that night. Book for the size of your party and you'll be put somewhere that fits. Every room is private, locks from the inside, and has its own attached bathroom — none of it shared.

  • Room one

Two queen beds, a sofa and an airbed. The largest — built for a family or a group.

  • Room two

A double bed and an airbed. The easiest to get at short notice.

  • Room three

  • Room four

A queen bed and an airbed. Comfortable for two, workable for three.

  • Room five

A queen bed, a sofa and an airbed — room to spread out on a longer stay.
